WHAT ARE WINE FUTURES

The Wine Futures sale, in French En Primeur, is a mechanism created in Bordeaux, through which you can buy wines when they’re still aging in barrel. Basically you “make a reservation" on a wine, 18 to 24 months before it’s bottled. You buy it now, and you receive it when it’s ready. It’s a safe and controlled way to invest in Bordeaux wines, and to take home very sought-after bottles.

Interestingly enough, for 200 years the Futures sale was reserved only to English wine merchants. Only in the 1980s they decided to open the Place de Bordeaux to private clients as well. At the end of April there is the presentation of all the Châteaux, then, starting from May, the actual sale will begin. Get ready.

WHY BUY WINE FUTURES WITH TANNICO

There are a number of advantages when buying Wine Futures: first of all, the price of the wine can be 12 to 20% lower than the market release price. Beside the objective saving, it’s also a question of ensuring fine wines - the rarest Grands Crus Classés - that it can be very hard to put your hands on after the market release. It’s also considered to be a safe investment, knowing that you’ll see the return on it in two years or so. Buying En Primeur is also a good idea if you plan on holding the wines, that in 10 years (sometimes 20 or more) will keep increasing in value exponentially.

Tannico group in 2021 acquired majority shares of VALAP, one of the main wine e-commerce in France. Only in the past year, the group was entrusted with 600.000 orders and was able to ship 4.5 billion bottles around the world. In 2020 Campari Group entered the capital, followed by Moët Hennessy in a joint venture the next year. With a brand new and highly automated warehouse, Tannico is now one of the most important players in the wine and spirits online market.

HOW IT IS GOING TO WORK

Futures sales kick off right after the week-long tasting in Bordeaux at the end of April. During this time industry people and wine journalists get to try, before anyone else, the vintage that is going to be the protagonist of the campaign.

Prices and availabilities will be communicated by the Châteaux with very short notice, hence why it’ll be very challenging to be on top of every release. The price is decided every year depending on different factors (quality of the vintage, produced volumes, etc).

It’s literally a buying race: early birds get the worms. If you haven’t done it yet, subscribe now to our alerts, and it’ll be our pleasure to keep you up to date with every offer and new releases.

HOW TO COMPOSE YOUR WINE FUTURES CART

Wine Futures will be delivered starting from January 2024, that is at the end of the ageing period and after bottling. Therefore, it will not be possible to add them in the same order with other non-Futures products, and you will have to place two separate orders.

RECEIPTS AND PAYMENTS

Once you place your order with Wine Futures, you’ll receive an order confirmation. The purchase receipt (invoice) will be issued at the moment of shipping in 2024.

SHIPPING

We understand that buying the wine with such a large advance could be difficult for you to organize, which is why when the bottles become available, you will personally be contacted in order to confirm or change your shipping information.
